Matter Affect is a copious compilation with work by all artists, performers and collaboration partners who have been confronted with COVID restrictions in the program of De Perifeer in recent years; shows that have been cancelled, moved (several times), took place in an adapted form or could not even be booked anymore.

De Perifeer asked everyone involved to reflect on this strange time period in their very own way. Allowing almost every conceivable shape or form; in audio, text, image or combinations thereof. The list of participants is surprisingly long, especially for a small venue like De Perifeer. But at the same time the relatively manageable scale of De Perifeer makes it possible to make an elaborate compilation like this, in which the personal impact of COVID is clearly felt and there's room to show what is hidden behind numbers and graphs.

All submitted material is collected in an A4 box in an edition of 250. Matter Affect consists of substantively different entries from almost every conceivable art discipline. The whole thing is accompanied by a contextual booklet; basically a concise overview of events.

And then we'd almost forget that Matter Affect is also a very special release for another reason entirely; it’s the 100th release on the Esc.rec. label!

"The Deventer-based record label Esc.rec. has graced the pages of Vital Weekly quite often in earlier editions of our magazine. And with positive words of praise, much deserved too, for example for releases by the likes of Karen Willems, Francisco López, Gintas K, Plan Kruutntoone, Jeroen Diepenmaat, Machinefabriek or Jos Smolders. Yes, you read that right. The cream of the crop in improvised music, electronic experiments, electro-acoustic research and sound art finds a warm and welcome home on the Esc.rec. roster.

The 100th release by Esc.rec. is a cause for celebration and is marked by the release of the multimedia compilation box Matter Affect. Esc.rec released CDs, LPs, cassettes, download cards, books with CDs... So it may not come as a surprise that all stops are pulled on the presentation of this set.

The A4-sized cardboard box - in a hand-numbered limited edition of 250 copies - is host to four CDs, booklets, riso and offset prints, videos, cards, and a flexidisc. Because matter matters for this label. Yes, you can download the materials, and there are QR-coded links to online works too, but still: Esc.rec. produces artefacts, objects... To paraphrase UK indieband Dry Cleaning: materials for 'emo dead stuff collectors'. Indeed, wíth the emotional attachment that a tangible product provides; holding a record in your hands and putting it on is a markedly different haptic and cultural phenomenon than loading a bunch of bites into a player, phone or whatever streaming tool. Where matters effect affect.

Stuart A. Staples of Tindersticks once told me in an interview his band was 'in the record-making business'. Not CDs; he meant records. Staples meant to say: the flow of songs, the fact of the matter you need to flip an LP, the question of one record or two when the collection of songs is larger... These things make a difference; they matter. Along those lines exactly Esc.rec. works with the artists to find the best placement, carrier, outlet, form(at) for their works. That may be a side of a flimsy 7" record or the full digital glory of a CD. Or putting creative output centre stage in a non-auditory fashion.

What do we get once we open this horn of plenty-meets-Pandora's Box? A goodie bag to behold, that's for sure, filled with previously unreleased and exclusive materials by all artists, performers and collaboration partners who have been confronted with COVID restrictions in the program of De Perifeer in recent years; shows that have been cancelled, moved (several times), took place in an adapted form or could not even be booked anymore. Because, apart from the record-making business, Esc.rec. also puts on shows, in De Perifeer in Deventer.

Nobuka's searching and drifting auditory quest seem to reflect unsteady, unsettled unease - like walls caving in, while at the same time running up against these walls to test the limits of space and time. FEAN finds peace in glacial Andreas Gursky-like horizontal plains, a truth-finding mission with the sparsest tools and whispered poetic words. Atoomclub projects long lines and
intimate finger-picked guitar, and Dario Calderone, Roland Dahinden and Gareth Davis operate on the outer edges of electro-acoustic lightly felt wonder and doom-laded dread. Speed-core cut- and mashup freakiness come courtesy of ZALM. There is no end.

Like many of the label releases that went before, Matter Affect is masterfully curated, lovingly presented and very well executed, basically, all one can wish for in a stellar record label. But with Matter Affect, there's more. There's an added emotional layer, a common thread, binding producer and artist and listener. A lived experience we all shared in those strange times, affecting us then and since. Matter Affect delivers more intimacy, more depth, and more emotional heft with the dead stuff to collect. Matter Affect boldly underlines the fact that Esc.rec. is indeed in the record-making business and therewith in the business of factoring in so much more. This present to the listener is a powerful and deeply moving testament to the power of creativity, an unmissable elixer in the direst of times. From the fringes, straight to the heart."

"Het Esc.rec label is een klein maar fijn label, dat in 2004 door kunstenaar Harco Rutgers te Deventer is opgericht. Daarbij verschijnt in allerlei formats en genres muziek, van verschillende innovatieve bands en artiesten, die veelal experimenteel en avontuurlijk is. Er hangt altijd een kunstzinnige zweem om het label heen, dat zich ook wel eens op andere manieren uit dan muziek alleen. Zo is er vanuit de studio van Harco ook de zogeheten “De Perifeer”, hetgeen een platform is voor muziek, kunst, performance en experimenten. Deze ruimte in het Havenkwartier in Deventer biedt plek aan zo’n 20 tot max 30 bezoekers. Overigens organiseert De Perifeer ook buiten deze locatie nog wel eens evenementen op grotere podia dan wel festivals. Door de jaren heen heb ik, mits het op cd(r) uitgebracht was, zoveel gevarieerd moois en nieuws via dit label mogen ontdekken.

Nu is dan de 100ste release Matter Affect een heugelijk feit, hetgeen een grootse prestatie is voor een klein onafhankelijk label. En dat is reden voor een feestje, maar ook voor een bijzondere uitgave. Dat bleek wel toen de A4-formaat doos door de brievenbus kletterde. Over deze release zegt het label zelf: 'Matter Affect is een stevige compilatie met werk van alle kunstenaars, artiesten en samenwerkingspartners die de afgelopen jaren in het programma van De Perifeer te maken kregen met corona-beperkingen; shows die zijn afgelast, (meerdere keren) verplaatst, in aangepaste vorm plaatsvonden of niet eens meer geboekt konden worden. De Perifeer vroeg alle betrokkenen op eigen wijze te reflecteren op deze vreemde periode. Dat mocht op elke denkbare manier; in audio, tekst, beeld of combinaties hiervan. De lijst met deelnemers is verrassend lang. Maar de relatief beheersbare schaal van De Perifeer maakt het nog nét mogelijk om een uitgave als deze te maken, waarin de impact goed voelbaar wordt en er ruimte is om te laten zien wat er achter de cijfers schuilgaat.'

Eenmaal opengemaakt bleef ik dan ook maar uitpakken. Als eerste zijn er de 3 compilatie cd’s met samen 35 tracks en een lengte van ruim 161 minuten, waarop diverse voor mij bekende artiesten, als Hydra Ensemble, FEAN, Plan Kruutntoone, Lukas Simonis & Pierre Bastien en Jorg & Apzolut, maar ook onbekende artiesten (of waar ik wel eens van gehoord heb) hun visie op dit alles laten horen. Dat levert een uiterst afwisselend geheel op, waar naast de boodschap van de deelnemers ook de ziel van het label mooi vertolkt wordt. Het gaat van klanklandschappen tot meer elektronische experimenten en korte, gekscherende stukken; het past als een jas bij dit geweldige label.

Dan zit er ook nog eens een vierde cd bij, te weten Valse Rust, van het Ensemble Extra Ordinair. Dit is de joint venture tussen vocalist Han Buhrs en multi-instrumentaliste/toetseniste Nora Mulder, met Nederlandstalige avant-popsongs. Deze telt 5 tracks en duurt ook nog eens een goede 17 minuten, waardoor je al op zo’n drie uur muziek komt. Met de extra flexidisc van Peet En De Teefjes kan ik dan niks, maar die zit er ook nog bij met een eigen A4-formaat boekwerk. Er is veel van alles voor iedereen met materiaal uit diverse kunstdisciplines van nationale en internationale componisten, kunstenaars, muzikanten en organisaties. Dat alles nog eens los van alle fraaie artwork, prints en ansichtkaarten. Het is een ontzaglijk totaalkunstwerk geworden, die de 100ste op het label luister bijzet. Gefeliciteerd en chapeau, chapeau, chapeau!"

"Happy Anniversary, Esc.rec. ~ 18 years old and now on your hundredth release! How are you going to celebrate? We’re going to release a three-hour box set featuring artists reflecting on the pandemic, we’ll stuff the box with as many goodies as we can think of, and lead with an 18-minute track to honor the number of years we’ve been in business! Wow!

So yes, Hydra Ensemble‘s 'ICE' is a long introduction, turning from drone to avid experimentalism, a dirge for the ages. But doesn’t the pandemic deserve this sort of requiem? We’re all worn out, but we’re ready to start again. The fact that this release was also presented live at the Valkhof Festival in the Netherlands is itself a small miracle. And not every track is this long; there’s a 5-second track, and a 6-second track, and we’re still experiencing time distortion two years later.

Are those chickens in 'sonder'? Whatever birds nobuka puts into the mix, we’re confident that no eggs were cracked. The world was cracked, we were cracked, but bird life went on as before, with a little less air and noise pollution. The combination of industry, wildlife and melody is a contagious collision. Toward the end, the traffic returns. FEAN responds by singing and sounding chimes, a lovely form of lullaby. atoomclub takes the train amid sirens, counterbalancing the chaos with guitar. Each person has their own defense mechanism. 'Life in the village, it’s difficult', admits Plan Knuutntoone, battling church bells with dissonant improvisation.

Many entries seem to take place in a fog, such as the 'Vivarium' collaboration. The news never seemed to get any better; the fog never seemed to clear. Certain titles are painfully of their time: 'Social Distancing', 'A lot has happened since you last logged in'. And yet some artists seem to have made it through okay, reflecting on the experience with wistfulness. Kabas is one of these, the all-too-brief 'Avondstad' one of the compilation’s most melodic pieces. One Small Step seems to have the most fun, creating a whistle and percussion pas de deux that comes across as playful pratfalls. Dotlights‘ aforementioned 'A lot has happened' rises from a gentle ambient beginning to blossom into a chill-out track, examining the possibility of peace, even in the midst of a global pandemic. More electronics emerge from slo-fi, Snackbar the Ambassador and more, reminding listeners of all they have lost and regained. The apartment is no longer the only dance floor. Jorg and Apzolut‘s 'Ernst' is a pure invitation to the club, UGLYDUB‘s 'Test Run' a blast of tempo and distortion. Toxic Chicken (so many chickens, so little time!) bounces like agitated atoms, a cool IDM breeze at its back. And Homosampliens‘ cheerful 'Little Things I Like' serves as evidence that the pandemic didn’t take everything away, but did readjust our focus.

Due to the diversity of the compilation, there’s likely something for everybody, while it would be surprising if anyone loved everything. But it’s hard not to fall in love with the breadth of human emotion on display here, culminating in the wild 40-second blast of 'Te Gekke Dingen Doen In De Zon' by ZALM. While the compilation casts a wide net, it contains a loose trajectory, from drone to dance, improvisation to composition, lockdown to emergence. The best news of all: the artists are now performing live again."

"Esc.rec has pulled together a spell-binding 37-track compilation of sound art to mark the label’s 100th release. Hydra Ensemble, Nobuka and Karen Willems are among the artists featured.

Matter Affect features artists connected to De Perifeer, a Dutch music, art and performance platform launched in 2014 by Harco Rutgers. The sound artist and designer is also behind Esc.rec.

According to the album’s note, it features 'artists, performers and collaboration partners who have been confronted with COVID restrictions … shows that have been cancelled, moved (several times), took place in an adapted form or could not even be booked anymore.'

Run times range from Tijden van Nood’s five-second piece “U Luistert” to Hydra Ensemble’s “ICE,” clocking in at a little under 18 minutes. There isn’t a ton of consistency on display here, as one would expect from such a wide-ranging collection. What ties it all together is a touching intimacy, a reminder that sound art is often most deeply appreciated in-person.

At the same time that we are grateful for Matter Affect, we are once more reminded of what the pandemic has cost both creators and lovers of this beautiful artform."

"Deze prachtige doos, gelukkig nog steeds verkrijgbaar, had hier al veel eerder voorbij moeten komen, maar is uiteindelijk te bijzonder om definitief over te slaan. Het draait op deze bij Esc.rec. verschenen box allemaal om het eveneens in Deventer gelegen De Perifeer. Een podium voor alternatieve muziek dat, net als alle andere podia, tijdens Covid-19 zijn deuren moest sluiten. Als een soort van troost kregen alle musici die daardoor werden getroffen de vraag om een bijdrage te leveren aan dit ‘Matter Affect’. Dat kon middels muziek of door beeldende uitingen, allemaal verzameld in die doos. Aangevuld met een boekwerk op A4-formaat met daarin alle concerten die in die periode niet door konden gaan, of in gewijzigde vorm plaats vonden. Alles bij elkaar vormt deze honderdste uitgave van nog altijd één van de meest interessante labels van experimentele muziek, een mooie staalkaart van bijzondere Nederlandse musici binnen de jazz, geïmproviseerde muziek, elektronica en wat al niet meer.

Op voorhand kunnen we stellen dat de aangeleverde stukken in eigenlijk alle gevallen zeer de moeite waard zijn. Te beginnen op de eerste Cd met ‘Ice’, een compositie van bassist Gonçalo Almeida en uitgevoerd door het Hydra Ensemble, een boeiende mix tussen experimentele elektronica, improvisatie en postrock. Eerder kwam de groep hier voorbij met hun album ‘Voltas’. Met name het middendeel klinkt angstaanjagend spannend, gevolgd door prachtig melancholiek vioolspel. Het luisterrijke en mooi subtiele ‘Sonder’ van Nobuka, het alias van Michel van Collenburg zit er pal achter. Ook deze musicus kwam hier al enige keren aan bod, het laatst met zijn ‘Reiko’ en ‘Road to Reiko’. En nieuw werk komt hier binnenkort aan bod. Het uit Annelies Monseré, Sylvain Chauveau, Joachim Badenhorst, Romke Kleefstra, Jan Kleefstra en Rutger Zuydervelt bestaande FEAN kwam hier ook eerder aan bod, in deze box vertegenwoordigd met het prachtige ‘Oare Tiden’. Een bijzonder ingetogen, fijnzinnige compositie, één om bij weg te dromen, met name door de gesproken woorden van dichter Jan Kleefstra. Atoomclub, het alias van de eveneens met elektronica werkende Hugo Heinen, kende ik nog niet. Het tussen experimentele elektronica en folk bewegende ‘Grasduinen’ smaakt echter naar meer. En natuurlijk mag Plan Kruutntoone op deze compilatie eveneens niet ontbreken. Het ontregelende ‘Life at the Village; It’s Difficult’ past helemaal in wat we van dit construct gewend zijn, dat viel mij al eerder op.

De stukken op de tweede en derde Cd zijn een stuk korter en dus beperk ik me hier tot een selectie. Zo valt de solo op sopraansax op van Albert Cirera, een saxofonist die hier binnenkort ook nog aan bod komt. Een sterk staaltje circulaire ademhaling zet deze meester hier in. Klanken die alle kanten op schieten. Andere fascinerende solo’s zijn die van Guillaume Gargaud op gitaar, ‘Sound (Improvisation)’ en van Karen Willems op percussie en elektronica, ‘Music for Slobozia, Texas’. En dan is er het Vlaamse kwartet Kabas met ‘Avondstad’ waarvan ik eerder het album ‘Abel’ besprak. Origineel is ook zeker ‘Morning’ van het trio One Small Step, bestaand uit tapdanser Janne Eraker, bassist Roger Arntzen en Vegar Vårdal op fiddle. Veel spannende elektronica ook op deze drie Cd’s, met name op de derde schijf. Het ritmische ‘Slofi’s End’ van Slo-Fi, een alias van Roel Meelkop springt er uit, evenals het aantrekkelijke ‘Taucherwiese’ van Snackbar The Ambassador en het heerlijk ontregelende ‘Keysers’ van Ötonn. Bijzonder zijn ook het opzwepend ritmische ‘The Train in Spain’, ja, de muziek heeft wel wat weg van dat ritmische geluid dat een trein maakt, van Lukas Simonis en Pierre Bastien en het disruptieve ‘Here We Go’ van Zbigniew Chojnacki. Leuk zijn ook de jingles van het in die tijd opgerichte radiostation ‘Tijden van Nood’ op deze schijf."
