about

Souvenirs van de Woeste Grond is a project initiated by Landscape Overijssel and Kunstenlab. In this project two artists collected stories about the countryside landscape in order to save them from obscurity. In the second phase of the project eight different artists make a souvenir based on the collected stories. These souvenirs are available at different locations in the province of Overijssel. You can find more information at www.souvenirsvandewoestegrond.nl.

This CD is one of those eight souvenirs and is released by Esc.rec. in a limited edition, with a handmade cover by Harco Rutgers. But it's also available as a digital download, if you prefer that.

This is a release with specially composed music by several artists, selected by Harco Rutgers, in the context of the project ‘Souvenirs van de Woeste Grond’. The six compositions are based on the stories collected by Heidi Linck about Losser and it’s surroundings. The release itself is also based on one of those stories.

Introductions to the stories that form the basis for this release can be found in the booklet accompanying the limited release. They can be read in their entirety at www.souvenirsvandewoestegrond.nl (in Dutch).

The six artists who composed a track for this compilation are: Gluid, Gareth Davis, Machinefabriek, Wouter van Veldhoven, Reinier van Houdt and Weerthof.

Review by Julian Cowley in The Wire:
Souvenirs Van De Woeste Grond (Souvenirs From The Wasteland) is an offshoot from a project through which artists Heidi Linck and Hans Jungerius seek to conserve rural stories from the Netherlands. This release presents six pieces, brandishing latitude and longitude coordinates, inspired by some of those stories and the landscape within which they originated. Gluid’s jaunty post-rock melody is augmented with the creaking of oaks, thunder and wind chimes; Reinier van Houdt blends location recordings with resonant hollowness and bowed piano microtones. Weerthof’s sleek setting of a Dutch poem takes its model from Sesame Street; Wouter van Veldhoven creates a melancholy vignette of abandonment. Machinefabriek depicts a river in lurid tones; bass clarinettist Gareth Davis contributes an overcast and brooding atmosphere, entitled “Stone”. In the manner of souvenirs these varied occasional pieces generally seem far closer to touristic anecdotes than to narratives arising out of rooted life.

Review by bvv in Gonzo (circus) magazine:

Review by Richard Allen in A Closer Listen:
This release is so much fun it makes me want to learn Dutch. The album features new music from Gluid, Gareth Davis, Machinefabriek, Weerthof, Reinier van Houdt and Wouter van Veldhoven, which is enough by itself. But the backstory is even more intriguing.

It all started when two artists began to collect stories about the local landscape. This led to a larger project, as eight different artists (and sub-artists) created works based on the stories. These are, in no particular order, an incense holder in the shape of a brick factory, a ring in the shape of a house, a scented soap in the shape of a hand, a horse head bust, a ceramic cow cup, a potato beast and a map. These souvenirs (some available for purchase) are scattered throughout Overijssel and make for a fun treasure hunt. And what might one play while going on said treasure hunt? Souvenirs Van de Woeste Grond, of course! The physical copy includes the original stories in Dutch, but one can get a feel for the project by visiting the website below.

And now to the music – some nice surprises here as well, perhaps the biggest being a quiet yet playful piece from Machinefabriek that nods its head to Colour Tones, beginning with the intonation, “Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Brown, Purple” over a watery backdrop, leading directly to some thick guitar chords that echo until the finale of the piece. At this point an amused narrator completes the color wheel, commenting: “Black – it’s really dark, how’d that happen? Don’t mess around with black, there’s no future in it.” The track would make a fitting companion to Public Service Broadcasting’s “Roygbiv”; painters and dreamers will love it.

Wouter van Veldhoven contributes a tender guitar track with wordless vocals; Reinier van Houdt offers a quiet, rustling drone that grows in volume and stature as it develops, adding bells and ominous tones. Gavin Miller generates a 15-minute piece that comes across as an elegy for lost tales in a lost land. Gluid begins with a thunderclap before settling into a sweet reverie of birds, bass and bells. Weerthof makes copious use of wooden glockenspiel, trumpet and rain, ending with the thunder initiated by Gluid. But the real winner is Landscape Overijssel and Kunstenlab, for finding such a creative way to honor their local heritage.

Review by Sven Schlijper in Kindamuzik:

Review by PvC in Ambientblog:
"Souvenirs van de Woeste Grond " (roughly translates as "Souvenirs from the Wasteland") is a part of a landscape-inspired art project inspired by the Dutch province "Overijssel".

"In this project two artists (Heidi Linck and Hans Jungerius) collected stories about the countryside landscape in order to save them from obscurity. In the second phase of the project eight different artists make a souvenir based on the collected stories."

This particular album (available as digital download or limited edition CD released by the adventurous Esc.rec. label ), is one of those 'souvenirs'!

Thematically - ánd musically - there's a clear relation to "Herfsttonen", a 2010 release dedicated to a village (Okkenbroek) in about the same part of Holland.

For "Souvenirs van de Woeste Grond ", label curator Harco Rutgers invited artists to create a composition based on the stories collected by Heidi Linck about Losser and it’s surroundings.

With the exception of Gareth Davis (presenting "Stone" - the longest track with the darkest atmosphere of this album), all artists are Dutch: Gluid ("Sound" without the first vowel: "Sund"), Machinefabriek, Wouter van Veldhoven, Reinier van Houdt and Weerthof have taken the stories and sounds of the Losser surroundings as the starting points of their compositions.

Taken away from the cultural context of this particular project, their rather abstract yet also 'natural' soundcapes still stand firm and deserve to be widely heard outside Overijssel (and Holland) too!

Wherever you may live, I guess there will always be some (disappearing and almost forgotten) wasteland stories that these tracks could be the perfect soundtrack to.

By the way: If you can read Dutch, check souvenirsvandewoestegrond.nl for all the details and background stories to this remarkable project.

Review by Jan Willem Broek in Caleidoscoop/Subjectivisten:

Review by FdW in Vital Weekly:
In a very nice hand crafted and printed digipak we find this project curated by Harco Rutgers, the man behind Esc.rec. It all has to do with countryside he lives in, the surroundings of Deventer - go get a map - and that happens to be one my favourite Dutch surroundings. Open space, wood, small rivers, farms and all that. Oh, by the time I am old and rich...

From various locations in that area stories were captured and if you go there you can hear them - I assume in some arty setting? One of these souvenirs, as they are called, is this project by Rutgers, for which he invited six composers to take one location/story and build a musical piece around it. In the booklet we find parts of that, but they can be found online too: www.souvenirsvandewoestegrond.nl - all in Dutch.

But in the international language of music, we have here some great music. All quite moody and dark, maybe reflecting the 'wild earth' of the title (I am not sure), but there are also some variations. There is a nicely obscured piece by Reinier van Houdt, normally a piano player for the serious modern music, with a processed piano towards the end, Weerthof's sampled pop music (closing down the proceedings on a melancholic but musical note) and Gluid, opening here, with a piece that vaguely owes to the world of IDM. The four pieces in between are the more abstract ones. Gareth Davis for instance with his bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, piano and tape spans in fifteen minutes lots of silence and some very moody wind instruments, shimmering like wind, and Machinefabriek does the same using whatever he always uses; or so it seems. Maybe for his doing an easy piece? Wouter van Veldhoven surprises me with a piece of guitar playing, eroded by low magnetic impulses, and corroded voices. Almost like a singer song writer I thought. Very nice. I usually don't like compilations, but this one is great!
