On the evening of 18th October Toxic Chicken was enjoying a walk through the city of Haarlem (Netherlands) in pandemic times. With all bars and restaurants locked up and nobody out in the streets, the sights had been surreal and beautiful. At the city square (Grote Markt) the poisoned poultry halted the sightseeing journey and connected to the digital world of free internet, while experiencing the rare loneliness of no one being around. This changed as around 22:15 a strange man popped up out of nowhere. He had been loudly shouting odd sounds from far away, but as TC was minding it's own business, to suddenly stand next to him was quite a 'surprise'.

The stranger aggressively informed TC that he was the person depicted on the statue that stood there and without reason or warning started to hit chicken's head wildly with his fist. TC escaped, but didn't dare to go to sleep, instead the feathered one dove into the sampled sounds of ukulele, guitar, synth, melodica and started to make sweet music with them. Somehow the bamboozled state of a shaken mind brought out numerous melodies and ideas. For 3 sleepless nights in a row they came and went & now you can hear them back in order of creation within this 'Sweet Surprise'.

Toxic Chicken is Kai Nobuko's longest running audio project and has released several albums on Esc.rec. in the past, and many more on other labels. "It's like a diary, but with sounds and music instead of written words." Kai lived off grid in London and Thailand for well over a decade and has now resurfaced above ground in the land of wooden clogs and cheese.
