Sound artists Radboud Mens and Matthijs Kouw have been working together since 2001. Over the last 5 years they have been working on minimalist compositions using longstrings and a modular synthesizer. In this live concert they also used a church organ. At first glance, nothing much seems to happen in these compositions. Listeners who immerse themselves in the music of Mens en Kouw will, however, be surprised by the rich character of the complex shifting sound layers, which lead to an intensive listening experience reminiscent of the work of composers such as La Monte Young, Eliane Radigue and Alvin Lucier.
Vondst and De Perifeer organize a series of concerts together, in the Lebuinus church. You are now listening to a recording of one of these concerts. In this series we hear and see artists that fit very well with this impressive location; in search of a contemplative and sometimes even meditative atmosphere that seamlessly connects with the cathedral space and the acoustics of this majestic location.

What may seem a gimmick is the free download by Radboud Mens and Matthijs Kouw, for which the label also printed a postcard. A great tool to get your work out there for free and still have a physical object. On May 29th of this year, these two men played at the Lebuinuskerk in the small city of Deventer and this release is, I think, the first time they release a live recording. Their previous releases were all studio recordings (see Vital Weekly 1173, 1168, 1075). They are both known for their love of all things drone-based and this one-hour work is no different. Mens and Kouw brought in a modular synth (Kouw) and a long string installation (Mens); the latter has been experimenting with these for some time now, either solo as well as part of the Staalplaat Sound System, of which he is also a member. The recording is a live recording, picked up by a pair of microphones. Maybe they used a couple of devices to do the recording, and this is the result of a mixdown. I am not sure there. Recording using microphones in a wide-open space such as a church mean that all the 'other' sounds that are produced unintentionally are also picked up. This happens here once and for me breaks the slow, tranquil mood of what is going on. Shit happens; I think is what they say. From what seems to be line hum at the start, the piece slowly starts building and sounds are added all the time, layer by layer; like peeling an onion in reverse. There is a whole of sounds around the thirty-five-minute point and then the onion is peeled off again. There is very occasionally a bit of an acoustic rattle to be heard and I assume that is Mens fiddling with something on his long strings, changing the vibrations or such. The whole piece is a constant flux, changing and shifting all the time, and a true delight for all drone heads.

In februari 2017 bracht Moving Furniture Records een album uit van het duo Radboud Mens – Matthijs Kouw, onder de simpele titel ‘1’. Begin vorig jaar volgde ‘2’. Beiden kwamen hier tot nu toe niet aan bod. Nu bij het in Deventer gevestigde Esc.Rec., onder de al even prozaïsche titel ‘Live 29/05/2019‘, ook nog de opnames van een vrij recent concert vrij kwamen – in de vorm van een ansichtkaart met een downloadcode – moeten we nu echt aan de bak.
En dat is beslist geen straf. ‘2’ bevat twee stukken, de twee kanten van de LP, ‘C’ en ‘E’ genaamd. Beiden duren iets meer dan twintig minuten. En in die twintig minuten gebeurt er vrijwel niets. Het is muziek van de lange adem. ‘C’ begint met een vrij hoge toon, die licht wisselt in hoogte, iets in volume, iets in sterkte. Maar het is allemaal minimaal. Dan komt er een toon bij, een andere kleur. Verderop weer zo’n actie, en nog een keer. Majeure veranderingen op de vierkante millimeter. Saai? Nee geenszins, mits je in staat bent om op een andere manier te luisteren. Niet uit te gaan van hemelbestormende ideeën en grootste verhalen.Van die school zijn Mens en Kouw niet. Dit zijn meesters van de details. En dan, terwijl je dit niet verwacht, ontstaat er ritme -repetitief ritme, op een heel subtiele, ongedwongen wijze – en neemt het volume steeds verder toe. Eindigen doen we dit ‘C’ met een penetrante, vrij hoge drone. ‘E’ begint nog subtieler dan ‘C’, vrij lange tijd hoor je bijna niets. Zelfs niet met de koptelefoon op. Dan heel uit de verte zwelt een vrij duistere golf aan, ebt weer weg en zwelt weer aan. Dan komt er een vreemd, storend geluid tussendoor. Het valt onder ruis, maar dan van het verrassende soort. Twee geluidswerelden naast elkaar, mengen doen ze niet. En ook hier ontstaat er gaandeweg meer onrust, loopt de spanning verder op, evenals het volume.
Sinds 2001 werken de twee nu samen. Met synthesizers, veldopnames, zelfgebouwde apparaten en allerhande voorwerpen creëren ze keer op keer een ongewone geluidswereld die vooral opvalt door het niet opvallen. We horen het terug op dit ‘2’, maar ook op het ruim een uur durende ‘Live 29/05/2019’. Het betreft hier opnames in de Lebuinuskerk van Deventer met de twee musici op synthesizer, lange snaar en kerkorgel. Drie dingen vallen hier op ten opzichte van ‘2’. Allereerst de akoestiek, je hoort die immense ruimt terug in deze opname. Het tweede dat opvalt is dat Mens en Kouw veel meer de tijd nemen om het proces te doorlopen. In de tiende minuut zijn we nog niet veel verder dan in de tweede. Nog steeds die langzame drone, slechts langzaam verkleurend. Het is allemaal van een weldadige traagheid. Tot slot valt op, het is tenslotte live, dat het er allemaal wat minder strak aan toe gaat. We horen soms omgevingsgeluiden, die echter volstrekt niet storend werken, in tegendeel, het geeft deze soms intense muziek iets luchtigs. Bijzonder is ook het geluid van die lange snaar met zijn sterke resonantie, vooral halverwege dit concert prominent aanwezig.

Voor de prijs van een postkaart (of gratis als download) kan je het concert herbeleven van instrumentenbouwer Radboud Mens en dreunmeester Matthijs Kouw in de Lebuinuskerk te Deventer. Hun ruimte-vullende drone wordt geproduceerd door het kerkorgel, een lange snaar en een modulaire synthesizer. De compositie krijgt ruim een uur de tijd om zich traag te ontwikkelen. Daarbij (on)gewild verstoord door omgevingsgeluiden. Wie houdt van de meditatieve drones van Éliane Radigue zal ook met deze postkaart de verlichting bereiken.

It is well known that churches around the world seem to have problems getting people into their services, but what if they hired Radboud Mens and Matthijs Kouw instead of Gospel choirs and pastors in robes that offer you the body of Jesus and some wine along with lengthy bible stories.
I bet if they enjoy their tax free heavens and combine it with their baskets that will always go from one of the church attendees to another in order to donate money for god knows what; I’m pretty sure they could afford Radboud Mens and Matthijs Kouw a royal payment.
With these two around they can be sure that the churches will be making a come back, probably filling up with newcomers that might have otherwise not have entered foot in such an environment. This duo knows how to optimally use the church acoustics, filling it up with the humbling drones that seem to take their time to flow out and about, making the entire inner church building resonate with relaxing yet abstract vibrations.
A thing that might be at times intense enough to convert a pessimistic atheist into thinking that they have been touched by a greater holiness, secretly channeled by Radboud Mens and Matthijs Kouw’s live performance. The tainted reputation of churches around the world will be polished up again, possible attracting more artists inspired by this illustrious duo, creating a whole new and promising future for churches and possible will flow into the start of a brand new drone religion.
For now, you could hear the church session at Esc.rec. which was released as a download code on a postcard, which I hope has been sent to as many churches as possible, so they too would consider organizing concerts with Radboud Mens and Matthijs Kouw and see how their buildings would flourish with these sounds and how much new people it would attract to their multiple houses of God. I only hope that a full house wouldn’t mess up with the acoustics of these impressive locations, but I guess great drone music like this will thrive no matter what.
