The second of 10 singles from the groundbreaking tap dance album
Movements for Listening! Chair Variations is a majestic sounding piece, thanks to the fantastic trumpet sound that the chairs in Emanuel Vigeland’s mausoleum make, and the magic, at least 15 seconds long reverb there. Roger Arntzen’s double bass is beautiful, while Vegar Vårdal adds layers of chair sounds, voice and brushes against the floor. The music is surprisingly groovy, and the tap dance can not be contained, there, under the urn and art of Emanuel Vigeland. Put on your best headphones and enter this unusual space!
One Small Step, the trio of Roger Arntzen, Vegar Vårdal and Janne Eraker, has been working with tap dance as percussion in music for several years, and released its first album Gol Variations on Clean Feed Records in 2022. With a wide-ranging background, One Small Step plays with minimal music, Norwegian folk music, jazz, and, of course, all kinds of rhythms. They challenge each other in their interaction, and launch into musical escapades that consist of textures, tonalities, imaginative ideas and exhaustive stretches. Roger Arntzen is a double bass player from In the Country, Trail of Souls, Ballrogg and Chrome Hill. Fiddler and folk dancer Vegar Vårdal has roots deep in the Gudbrandsdal, but travels around the world with his work and has even played with Camille Norment Trio at the Venice Biennale!
Daan Botlek is a visual artist from the Netherlands. He created the cover of the double vinyl record and the ten digital singles. These are all unique murals made in his atelier in Rotterdam, as a part of his artistic project called Primitive Practice.
Janne Eraker is a tap dancer based in Norway. She has roots in many places; born in Germany, raised in Norway, educated and started a family in the Netherlands. Also her dancing has many roots, starting with Balkan folk dances, swinging by competition dancing, musicals, contemporary and modern dance, and now fermenting all of it into her tap dancing. Eraker is fascinated by the sound of tap dance, and has worked a long time to create all kinds of music with it. Her work spans from improvised concerts to choreographed dance pieces, collaborating with a wide range of artists. In 2022 she released her first album Gol Variations with the trio One Small Step. As a performer she also dances in the Sebastian Weber Dance Company in Germany.
